Bukhansan National Park
So when planning out our trip to Korea I found someone's blog talking about his time in Korea and how he recommended climbing this mountain in the National Park Bukhansan just outside of the city of Seoul. It seemed easy enough. Take the orange line up to and take the 704 bus to the base of the mountain. He said it would only take 5 hours to complete and I thought it would be a lot of fun. I planned this for our last day in Korea so I thought it be an easy day, get there around 11, climb a mountain and be home around dinner time.
But that day neither one of us wanted to wake up on time. We ended up sleeping through breakfast and we got out of the hotel late so it put us back an hour. We hoped on the train and made it to the station where we would transfer to the orange line but since we had missed breakfast we need to grab something. We ended up having breakfast but that but us back another hour. By the time we had finished breakfast and ridden the train to the bus station it was already 1:00 and it was looking like the mountain wasn't going to happen. We were both mad at ourselves for moving so slowly and almost decided not to go and just try and do the Musical (which at the time we thought wasn't going to happen since our optimism was really low).
But we pressed on and found that it wasn't just a mountain climb. There were multiple trails to take that took you along different parts of the mountain all varying in difficulty. We decided that we wouldn't try and make it to the top and just wander around some of the lower ones. And I'm so glad we did. We ended up reading about and standing on top of some old castle walls that were used for the military to store weapons and house monks. And we stumbled upon a giant Buddha statue. We kept on trying to leave but then saw something cool or a different path and was all like "well, let's see where this goes and then we'll head back".
I've decided that I want to go back to this park and be able to spend an entire day there, traverse the different trails, walking the castle walks and making it to the top of the mountain. It was beautiful but we couldn't stay because we had a musical to see!
