Halloween in America Part 2: Costumes!
In Japan, people like to dress up as cute or funny things for halloween. I've seen lots and lots of adorable witches, cats, and even the occasional flower. But things are different in America.
In America kids often dress as the classic monsters of western culture. Vampires, ghosts, witches, and werewolves are all very common costumes for kids, and they're not always cute! Part of the fun of halloween is getting to be scary, not just scared all the time. People will often work to make their costumes scarier and more realistic.
Even adults dress up sometimes! Adult costumes are much more varied, and sometimes quite elaborate or detailed. Themes can range from the scary movie monsters mentioned before to pop culture characters and even joke costumes. Of course, adultus don't go trick or treating, but halloween costume parties are very popular, with everyone dressing up and drinking heavily with each other.
