Koto

Over the weekend, Katie invited Michael and me to see a traditional concert that her student was performing in. It was a great experience! I loved seeing everyone dressed up in kimono and listening to the music. I also really liked the singing, that style of singing is not well known in the Western world so I'm still not quite used to hearing it. It is very refreshing and intriguing to me.

Listening to the koto made me feel very nostalgic. I was a part of a koto club for a short time when I was in college. I really enjoyed playing it and learning how to read the sheet music. I wish I could have continued playing. After hearing the concert, I have started wanting to play again. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to go, or what to do in order to be able to learn.

Winning!

Last Friday on my way home I stopped at a Lawson to use their restroom the way home. Back in the states many gas stations and convenience stores require you to buy something in order to use the restroom so I walked around looking for something to buy as I feel like I have to do that if I use the facilities. I came across some figures and prizes that were available for a promotional lottery drawing if you spend a certain amount of money while there.

I thought they looked pretty cool but didn't realize that the letters on the bottom of the boxes were the prize levels. I did however see a pen I really liked so I choose that to buy. So I walk up to the counter and pay for a pen, and the clerk hands me the box to pull a ticket from. I reach in, pull one out and unseal it and set it down. The clerk looks at the ticket and gasps and says "A?!", then looks at me with such awe and then rushes over the the figures and hands me the grand prize. It was such an amazing moment of luck and disbelief. I had went in there only to use the restroom and I'm leaving with a 39 cm tall figure that I only paid 500 yen for.
