An Odd tradition
Christmas is right around the corner! So I thought it would be fun to talk about Christmas traditions. My step-dad and I have had a Christmas tradition since he married my mom. Each year, after my mom goes to bed, we watch a scary movie. We try to find a possession movie, but sometimes we watch another type of scary movie. This is an odd tradition, but it’s one I look forward. It’s become our way of ending Christmas day.

Cranberry Sauce
One food that only comes out during the holidays is cranberry sauce. It is very special and is only served once or twice a year. Even though it is rare for people to eat, it is actually very easy to make if you can find fresh or frozen cranberries. It is also quite tasty, be careful because it is a sweet sauce that you eat with savory things like meat or potatoes, so not everyone may like the taste.
Here is a recipe for cranberry sauce:
100g sugar
juice of one orange (2 mikans)
orange peel zest (to taste)
250g whole cranberries
In a sauce pan, put in washed cranberries.
Cover the cranberries almost completely with orange juice and water.
Put the pan on medium heat and add in the sugar and orange zest.
Stir.
When the sauce start boiling the cranberries should start popping. Continue stirring with the pan on simmer until all of the cranberries have popped.
Put in a container and let it cool. You can keep it in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks.
Serve at room temperature, and voila! You have cranberry sauce.

Korean BBQ
Over the weekend a bunch of the gem teachers and a few of the staff of gem got together and went out for Korean BBQ at a restaurant in Kozon-ji. It was fun going out and getting to know the people we work with a little more. The teachers arrived at the station and the staff drove us to the restaurant. We took a wrong turn but we were able to navigate the back roads and located the restaurant. Although from the outside we were unsure whether or not it was the correct place and if was even open. But once inside we sat down and stared at the menu...only to realize that we barely knew what was on the menu. Thankfully the staff read it out and ordered for us.
We played a game while waiting for our food to arrive called Two Truths and a Lie. The premise is simple. You think of two things that are true about you and you think of one lie about you that could potentially be true and everyone else has to guess which one is the lie. We also shared with each other what our favorite words were in both English and Japanese. Some of the favorite words in English were : little, shenanigans, reverberate and onomatopoeia. Some of the favorite Japanese words were: yuubinkyoku 「郵便局」, hikikomori 「引き篭もり」and mendokusai 「めんどくさい」.
The meat that was ordered looked like giant pieces of bacon. It was delicious.

Afterwards we got a little lost trying to find the train station. We accidentally turned down the wrong street in the back roads and had to reverse back to the road only to have to reverse more because another car was coming towards us. We drove a little more and ended up finding a dead end and were really confused with google map. Thankfully we saw a connecting street that lead us to the main street and got to the station with 3 minutes before the train left. We said good night and headed back home to Kanonji.
