What is "mizuhiki"?

So my wife and I are preparing for our wedding party, and she says she wants to "mizuhiki" (水引). When I first heard the word, I thought "okay, sure, we can get it". But as I kept thinking about it, I realized I didn't know what it was! She tried to explain it as best she could, saying how it is used for special occasions like weddings and funerals, and that there special meaning into how it was tied for each occasion. I still couldn't picture what she was talking about, so we eventually went to a few places that had them. Apparently it's paper twisted into a cord, which is then different shapes, like flowers and cranes and such. They are actually quite beautiful, and I can't imagine the time and skill that is required to make them. I should look into the craft a bit more, and see what else it can be used for!
