I can't believe it, but I'm learning how to cook---and enjoying it!
When I first came to Japan, I immediatly set out to buy myself a new frying pan or two. I really like the one that I have that's shaped like a peice of bread. It's just perfect for making french toast!
The first thing I had to make was Eggs Benedict. I went to the supermarket with a list of ingredients and managed to get almost everything. Then I went home and practiced the recipe before trying it with my class. I knew so little about cooking that I thought hollindaise sauce was "holiday sauce"! But it turned out fine and the kids ate it up.
The second dish I learned was to make a Sloppy Joe. Back in America, this is a quick and easy dish for my mother to make and we often served it at parties. But I didn't have access to the same stuff to make it here, and I had to find an easy recipe. I think one of the reasons I have been put off by cooking is that the list of ingredients or the steps can be just too long for my liking.
I found that while making this dish, I actually enjoyed chopping the onions and peppers. I may have put it more than I needed! I also learned that ketchup is a pretty good sauce when cooking minced meat.
The kids and I liked the sloppy joes! I may continue to make it for myself in the future.
