How Flin Flon got its name
Hello!
Apologies for the late post! Today I want to talk a little bit about the town I grew up in. I mentioned it briefly in one of my earliest blog posts, a small town in Manitoba called Flin Flon.
Lots of places in Canada have silly names. There are towns all over that for onr historic reason or another, have names that sound funny or silly to say. But I think Flin Flon is the one town that I have actually had to convince people I was joking with them when I said its name.
“Flin Flon?? That's not a real place!” They would say.
“Yes it is! I know because I was born there!” I would have to convince them.
The history of how Flin Flon got its name is almost as strange as the name itself. In 1917, a number of people who were prospecting for new mines to build and minerals to produce were wandering through the Manitoba wilderness. They came across a book in the middle of nowhere sitting on a rock. This book was titled “The Sunless City”, and featured the adventures of a man named Flintabatty Flonatin, who built a submarine to explore a bottomless lake.
The prospectors were so surprised and delighted by their strange discovery, that they named the mining camp they built after the story's main character, and called it Flin Flon. The mining camp eventually grew into a small community, and still holds the name today. When you drive into the town from its main road, you can see a large statue that was built of Fintabatty Flonatin, and know that you are visiting a town that is quite unlike anywhere else!
