Summer
Summer is coming to a close. I love summer. I never liked summer before until I came to Japan. In California, summer is usually lacking in any sentimental value, at least in my experience. There is always water parks, swimming, BBQs, and... swimming. The scenery is always pretty bland. Brown, yellow, brown, yellow... Yellow grass, yellow mountains, brown grass, brown mountains. Yes, that's about it for summer time in California. Oh, of course summer vacation is always great! But there is just something more special about summer in Japan. Not just because of the more colorful scenery or the many things to see and do. What makes it special? I can't quite put my finger on it, but it does seem a bit more romantic. More permanent. More endless. More youthful. Maybe it's the festivals? The cicadas? The countless remarks of, "atsui!"? I have no idea. But in any case, I do appreciate summer in Japan. I always miss it before it ends. Tonight felt less summer-y as I stepped outside into the cool breeze. I was fortunate enough to catch some memorable summer moments this year.
