Motivation
Why study foreign languages at all, in particular English? I remember, living in italy, going to the university in Rome, and trying so hard to learn Italian properly, and I'd get asked why bother? There's always somebody around who speaks English anyway. You don't really need it. I think measuring everything by how much money you can make from it is a bit limited. In this case it was the reality of living in Italy that became so much more with knowledge of the language. But for Japanese, living in Japan, unless they travel a lot, the long term commitment may seem not to be worth the effort. But I think the main reason for discouragement is that too many people go about learning in the wrong way, memorizing, using materials of very questionable use, which means it seems so much harder than it is. Before spending all that time and energy, you should make sure you're going about it in the right way. I hope we can help you do that.
