Back to school

As the new school year starts, it might be a good idea to think about how you're studying English, to make sure you're making the most of your time. As one who has lived in many foreign countries, and had to learn the languages there, some things have become obvious to me. Most people think of language as a string of words in a row. All you have to do is translate each word, looking it up in the dictionary, and put it in the box, and after filling all the boxes, voila, you have an English sentence for example. Unfortunately it's not that easy. First of all you look up the word and you usually get a huge number of translation words, that all depend on the context. The context isn't given, so the word means one thing in one situation and something quite different in another. So that's a disaster. The result makes no sense at all. What you have to do is start with the situation, the context, and think what would I say in the same situation in the other languages. That only works if you have been exposed to the language in context, and noticed how the context defines the use of language. You start with the situation and then work down to the details, not the other way around. i always say learn new words in a sentence, in a situation, and connect it with that situation and not some translated words. it's the only way to achieve any fluency. Songs and chants are really the best practice. Try it.
