Can-utility and the Coastliners

Continuing on the subject of early Genesis music,
today I will refer to the song "Can-Utility and the
Coastliners" from the album "Foxtrot." The song
refers to King Cnut (or Canute) who was the the
king of the North Sea Empire in the early part of the 2nd millenium A.D. According to legend, Cnut
grew tired of the sycophantic behavior of people
in his court. Knowing that he was not as powerful
as his subjects thought, Cnut had his throne
placed on a coastal beach and "commanded" the
tide to not advance so as to not moisten the hem
of his royal robe. This, of course, failed. Cnut then
turned to his subjects and chastised them,
reminding them that kings do not have power
over God or nature.
