Brood X
I grew up in the western USA, which is very dry and mountainous. We didn't have cicadas. So the first time I heard real, live cicadas was when I was living in Japan.
When I moved back to America, I moved to the east coast, where the cicada is a regular part of summer.
This summer, "Brood X" is coming up. American cicadas come in 13-year cycles and 17-year cycles, and each year a different brood becomes adults. Brood X, also known as the Great Eastern Brood, is the biggest and loudest group.
We started seeing holes in the ground in April as the nymphs started coming up for air. Around the middle of May they were everywhere. Every outdoor surface was covered with shed exoskeletons. For the next month we'll be hearing them calling all day, every day. This is not the cute "min~min~" sound of Japanese cicadas. This is like listening to the World Maraca Championship inside a UFO's engine room It's over 90dB sometimes. Thank goodness they quiet down a few hours after sunset, or we wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Thanks for reading!
