A Month to Remember
In the U.S., February is Black History Month. Black is not my preference as as a a reference to a people (nor is white) as both were born out of ignorance, hate, and intentional divisiveness....nevertheless, Black History Month is a time to acknowledge the many contributions of people of African origins living in America- post slavery and their contributions to society--and the world. One of my favorites is inventions. There are things that we use everyday that someone of African American heritage invented. The 3-way traffic light was one of Garrett Morgan's MANY inventions. Prior to Morgan's invention, the traffic light consisted of 2 positions, go and stop ; this caused many accidents as warnings to stop, yield, slow down, were lacking. Garrett added the third warning for pedestrian crossing. Though this wasn't the only invention with some type of warning system, Morgan's system inspired what you see today when you stop at a traffic with pedestrian crossing.
