Festival Season in Japan

Acrobatic Performance GW Festival Season in Japan

I love the energy here in Japan during festival season. Back home in the United States I can only compare it to local carnivals because of all the food and games, but also to local County and State "fairs". At these "fairs" we celebrate local talent. Everything from raising animals and crops, to cooking them and caring and/or riding them! There are sometimes parades associated with them too, with local dance groups and bands performing. Actually similar to the talent in the parade and shows in the Maragume Castle Festival I went to.

I have to say though, Japan tradition, as a country, is much more celebrated in the festivals here. One reason I am sure, is the fact that you have a much longer history than the United States in which to develop that tradition. I really enjoy the aspect of this tradition in your festivals. I just wish I knew more about what I was watching. In fact, I have asked some Japanese local people questions about some of the things I have seen, and many don't know the answer either! I really enjoyed the acrobatic performance of the little boy wearing the mask and the man shown in my first picture. However, I have to say, some of the acrobats of this little boy, especially wearing that mask, made me a little nervous for him- but he was great!! Can anyone tell me the significance of the mask and the performance?
