Ketchup vs. Ketchup
I am not a huge fan of ketchup. It’s just ok. So, when I heard of omurice I was skeptical that it would be any good. Ketchup with eggs? No thanks! But I was curious and I still lived in America where omurice isn’t something you can find at your local restaurant. So I decided to try making it myself. I looked up a recipe and got to work. A short time later, I had myself a nice, hot omurice that surely would taste better than it looked (the omelette part is tricky, ok!). It didn’t. Turns out, I in fact did not like the egg and ketchup combination. I didn’t understand how it was such a popular dish.
Fast forward a year. I was now in Japan and still very curious about why omurice was seemingly so popular. So, I decided I would try omurice one more time. I looked up a recipe, probably the same one I used before, bought a few ingredients and made my omurice. This time, it was great! I couldn’t understand how I got such different results! How could I have disliked the ketchup and egg combination so much the first time and this time think it was actually kind of good? Then I realized the ketchup itself must be the secret. Yes, American ketchup and Japanese ketchup sound like the same thing, but in reality they have a different flavor. So, if you are ever in America and want to cook some omurice, make sure you find an Asian super market and get some Japanese-style ketchup!
