If You Love To Ride Bikes and You Know It, Clap Your Hands!
I am very happy to announce that I was able to purchase my new bicycle about a week ago, and let me just say, she’s a beauty! I love to ride bikes for many reasons. One reason, and maybe the most important, is that it’s fun! I don’t know about you, but I definitely spent my childhood afternoons on bikes, exploring and racing around the neighborhood with my friends. We would do that until the sun went to sleep, and it’s a memory strongly connected with happiness. Whenever I hop onto a bicycle now as an adult, I can’t help but feel like a kid again. It’s a magical sensation.
Other reasons I love to ride bikes are because not only does it save money on transportation, but also it’s good for my body and for the environment. Talk about three birds with one stone! The concept of being able to transport myself using my limbs and muscles is just simply incredible to me. I can get from point A to B and B to C if I use the strength in my legs and the will power in my mind. When I feel my heart pounding and the blood circulating through my veins, I know I am doing well for my body and for the earth’s body, and that makes me happy. Cycling can definitely be challenging at times with unwanted weather conditions, flat tires, etc., but being able to push yourself through those obstacles and ultimately reach your goal or destination is really rewarding and it makes me feel alive.
Getting around by bike is also a fascinating way to see the world around you. A bike can take you places where a car cannot go and show you things that a car cannot see. It reminds me to slow down, to take it easy. So many of us are so consumed with menial things, we are in a rush and are always thinking of what’s next. I myself am a victim of such things, but when I get onto my bike, I am grounded once again. I am focused on riding and what’s around me. I listen for cars, for people, and look for signs. I see nature up close, smell aromas more intensely, and I try to notice the details that often go unseen. I am reminded to take in what we call “now”, absorb it, and ultimately, to be present. When I am on my bike, I feel free, and it’s a beautiful thing.
I am so happy to be riding around Kagawa on my new bike; I am soaking it all in!
Until next time,
Cristina
