Manga momentum
Book Off is a trove for learning materials. Yesterday I stopped off at the local store thinking I could find some introductory teaching material or some philosophy book for beginners. Instead, I wound up in the manga sections looking for some that my students have mentioned, namely, at least in their English translations, Attack on Titan and Assassination Classroom. I did find myself the inaugural issue of Assassination Classroom after asked a store clerk “taco sensei ga arimasu ka?” and proceeded to wave my arms around like I imagined octopi did. But then, on my way out of the store, a series of manga at the top of a shelf caught my eyes for its simple cover design. When I opened it photorealistic black and white art exploded from the pages and I fell in love with Inio Asano’s art style, for in fact what I had picked up was another one of his darker themed fabulous creations known as Oyasumi Punpun. In fact, I had actually seen one of his mangas back in January when I first started to explore my surroundings. Wow. Of course I can’t read any of it, but I at least have something to connect over with my students and whoever random encounters I might make in my time here. I like to say that if I can read a page a day then I would be able to read two pages a day using the background knowledge that I gained through my first set of one-a-days. I think I better start with Yotsuba&!
