It's kendo time!

This past Tuesday I started something I had always wanted to try, but had never been able to in my home town: kendo! I was so excited to be given the opportunity to try such an amazing Japanese tradition, and when the idea was presented to me i said yes immediately. I told a few of my students that I had started kendo, and they all asked me the same questions!
Where do you practice? I practice in Kokubunji.
Do you go by yourself? No, Alex, Rose, and I drive in together, and pick up John along the way. We meet Baker at the dojo.
Does you're teacher speak any English? Yes, he is fluent in English, and he teaches us the proper Japanese terms for the equipment, stances, and moves.
How long has he been practising kendo? He has been practising for about 23 years.
Do you have all of the equipment? No, all I have is the shinai (the practice sword). I'll buy the rest of the equipment if i need to later on.
I have only had one lesson that was two hours long, but I really enjoy the sport of kendo so far. All week i have been itching to go back to the dojo and practice more! I live across the street from a dojo here in Kanonji, and as I get home in the evening after work, I can hear them shouting and duelling. It only makes me wish for Tuesday morning to come that much faster! I hope that in a few weeks I will be writing about kendo again, and about how I still really enjoy the sport.
