Whole grain bread

Before coming to Japan, I had been living in Austria, and one of the great things about being there was the culture of whole grain baked goods. Rye bread, pumpernickel, but other kinds of whole grain baked goods can be had just about everywhere, but you get to know where the best sorts are available. My apartment is just down the road from the Naschmarkt as the main open air market is called, where specialties from all over the world are sold, but also the traditional bakeries Austria is famous for. The chewy, not too soft consistency of these breads is not necessarily to the Japanese taste, I gather. Most of the baked goods here seem to be very light and airy, almost chiffon like. I don't even consider the packaged bread from the supermarkets. The best thing though is to get a bread maker. The cheapest, quite acceptable ones come as cheaply as 5000 yen, but the smell of fresh baked bread is really out of this world, I think. Try it.
