Joining a Gym

Like many people I attempt to stay in shape by exercising. Prior to Japan I used my university's gym and pool as well as ran and cycled. Once I got settled into Japan I was hoping to join a gym here that ideally had a pool. A bit sooner than I anticipated Joaquin told me there was a public gym nearby that also had a pool. So me a another new teacher went to scope it out. Unfortunately they were closed the fist time we tried to find it but when we came back the next day they were happy to assist us. At first we struggled a bit because of the language barrier, but someone who knew enough English was able to help us out. She showed us around the facilities which I thought were quite nice and explained all the details. The first thing I thought was interesting was that, at least with this gym, you bought your membership through a vending machine. Not only that, but you could only buy a membership for a maximum of three months. Once we finished this we were asked if we had indoor shoes for the gym. A bit puzzled we discovered that you had to wear indoor shoes even while working out. Of course we didn't own indoor only shoes that were appropriate for working out, but luckily the gym had a small selection of shoes that fit for a reasonable price. Since joining I've gone back almost every other day for the pool or gym and almost every time I discover some small aspect of Japanese culture or etiquette. I'm always trying my best not to make mistakes, but inevitably I overlook some etiquette and am quickly corrected.
