Generations
I have a really great class of senior citizens, who are so enthusiastic about learning. I'm really impressed. It would put to shame most of my younger groups, when it comes to learning. They say Japan is a "temporary" society, or at least was. The buildings are traditionally made of wood, which is not as lasting as brick or mortar. The traditions of Shinto and Buddhism put the stress on the acceptance of death, temporality, and respect for the dead. But that also means the idea of rebirth, again and again. After the war, the country was devastated, everything in ruins, the losses enormous, but without wasting time, the country rolled up its sleeves and set forth reconstructing at a furious rate. In all this there was the understanding that people work together, help each other, everyone pulling their own weight. Truly amazing. To the point that there came the boom. From destruction to flying high, admirable. It seems to have been in the air you breathe. After the tsunami as well, I ran into my former students of the SDF in Sendai. They were splendid in their tireless efforts to help out the survivors, cleaning up the ruins. That crisis and its consequences are far from over. Let's hope that feeling of solidarity will go on to pull Japan through the current crisis. Everyone's efforts are important. Don't you agree?
