Photo album
Going through things her sister left behind after her death, my cousin came upon this photo of my parents at that sister's wedding ever so long ago. A Polish wedding, of course, since the cousins in question were the children of my father's sister, his nieces. I wasn't at the wedding, at least as far as I can remember. It's hard sometimes to think that older people were once young too, and looked a lot different. What's more interesting though is how happy they seem to be. I don't have many memories of them being happy, but that may only be because the many years of really hard work, sickness, and various calamities made them bitter, and those later memories make the older ones fade. It's so nice to think that they too had their moment of joy on this earth, however brief it may or may not have been. When I hear of the far worse events going on in the world all the time, from wars to natural disasters, it's clear they never realized how lucky they were compared to many others in this world. It pays sometimes to remember how much harder a lot of people, probably a majority of the world's population, have it compared to us. Putting a perspective on things makes it a bit easier to bear, doesn't it?
