Hot heat, cool treat.

As summer arrives and cicadas begin their loud chorus, Japan turns to a favorite way to beat the heat: shaved ice.

Known as “kakigori,” Japanese shaved ice is a beloved dessert with a variety of flavors. From classic strawberry and melon to unique choices like matcha green tea and sweet red bean paste, kakigori offers something for everyone.

Recently, amid the buzzing cicadas, I enjoyed a refreshing sweet and sour plum-flavored kakigori. The finely shaved ice melted in my mouth, releasing the tangy plum syrup, bringing relief from the summer heat.

In Japan, kakigori isn’t just a treat—it’s a way to celebrate summer with friends and family at festivals or local shops.

As cicadas sing and temperatures rise, why not try kakigori to cool off and savor the essence of summer? Hot heat, cool treat.
