SkEye Stargazing App

This week, I'm going to review an app I started using to stargaze called skeye. The idea is that you can point the screen at the sky and it will tell you the names of stars and constellations. I've liked stargazing since I was a kid, but most of the time I was alone and I never learned how to identify specific stars and constellations. While the app isn't perfect, it's helpful for teaching a beginner like me.
When there are very few stars out, it can be very hard to orient yourself, as the app isn't perfectly aligned with the actual sky. The nice thing about SkEye is that it shows a fairly accurate representation of how each star should look, including size, brightness and color. For example, it's easier to identify the constellation Scorpius if you know to look for a diamond-shaped cluster of smaller, white stars with a large orange star at the base.
It also includes options to make them appear larger or smaller on your screen, change label settings, and toggle constellations on and off. I like to leave these on because it makes it easier to draw lines in my head. If you pick a constellation you know is easy to identify, like the big dipper, you can draw a straight line between two stars and use it to find something less recognizable.
