Back to School (Again)
On March 1, my kids went back to school for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic. They started the school year in September 2020 and have been attending classes online all year.
Starting March 1, all elementary students are changing to a "hybrid" schedule: three days of classes online from home and two days in person at the school.
In the United States, decisions about school policy are made very close to the local level, usually with a lot of input from parents. The United States national government has almost no control over schools. Even the state government only makes broad suggestions. The actual plan of how and when to reopen schools is made by the school district, which is usually at the county or city level of government.
To be honest, I don't really know how the pandemic is going in my area. I moved here during the pandemic, so I haven't made a lot of friends or visited a lot of places. The state government says that things are going well, and the county government says that things are going poorly. I just know the libraries, churches, and restaurants are mostly still closed.
The school district has been announcing its plan to reopen on Facebook, and they get a lot of angry comments from parents. About half of people still think COVID is 'just a flu' and can't believe that we still haven't reopened. About half of people can't believe that we're even considering reopening before we have 100% vaccination and that everyone will die if we reopen at all.
The school has been very patient and taken lots of time to hear everyone's point of view. In the end, people who don't want to come back can continue being online-only and every reasonable safeguard is in place for people who do want to come back.
One of my kids has been having trouble using the computer. She can pay attention and do her homework, but she still has trouble keeping track of windows and tabs, getting her microphone and camera set up correctly, etc. My other kid is very good with the computer, but she has a hard time staying focused and completing her homework for online classes. So I think both of them will do better with some in-person school.

Thanks for reading!
