In my previous post, I said:

I crossed 'write a novel' off my "bucket list".

This is a double idiom. I will explain:

"to kick the bucket" means to die. It is very informal. You would not see, "Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba until he kicked the bucket." in an obituary or biography.

With that in mind, a "bucket list" is a list of things you want to accomplish or experience before you die (kick the bucket).
