Device-Free Dinner

I was surprised to find out how many of my students eat dinner with the TV on.

For the past several decades, doctors have been worried about how much time people spend looking at screens instead of talking to other people. With smartphones and social media, the problems people are having have only gotten worse.

It's pretty common for American families to eat dinner together most days, and studies have shown that in families that regularly eat dinner together, children have fewer problems in school and are less likely to become involved in drugs or crime. But using a smartphone or watching TV during dinner almost cancels out the benefits of eating dinner together.

Some medical and social organizations have started public awareness campaigns to encourage people to eat dinner together with their families without electronic devices.

How common is it for Japanese families to eat dinner together?

How common is it for people to watch TV or play on their phones during dinner instead of talking to each other?

Thanks for reading.
