Pierogi for Christmas Dinner
I was invited to a small Christmas party with some new friends. I wanted to be thoughtful in making something for the potluck. As I've said before, my Christmas tradition is to eat polish food with my family. My master plan was to make some pierogi.
Pierogi sort of looks like gyouza, but it's a bit bigger. I was trying to make potato pierogi. I set up a table, made the potato filling, and read my Mom's recipe. I also watched 2 different youtube videos online on the process. The recipe called for all purpose flour, which I found in Japan. That's where it all went wrong.
I made the mixture for my dough pretty quickly. It was a mess, and there was flour everywhere. I started to beat it with a spoon. I turned the bowl and folded it. I got my hands into it and tried to knead it. The dough stuck to everything! My clothes, my hands, my bowl. It was too sticky!
I asked my friend for help, I talked to my Mom on messenger. I rewatched the video and looked up what to do. It said to add more flour. I added too much and started again. I remade the dough, adding a little flour. It got less sticky, but it never actually took on a form.
I was crushed. I later learned that maybe I had the wrong kind of flour. My kitchen was a huge mess and I don't know if I'll ever try to make pierogi again.
