A beach mystery
I went to the beach on Sunday! It's still May so that is a little crazy, but the weather was nice enough to swim. It was actually a little crowded, but I didn't know why. I saw groups of people in the sand, crouching over something.
I learned later that they were looking for "mategai" which in English is a "mollusc." I heard that if you sprinkle salt over a hole in the sand, that the mollusc will pop out. I asked a few different classes about this, getting a variety of reports.
"It's not good," said one student. "I don't like eating them."
"They're longer than hot dogs! And they have a shell," another student told me.
I looked up a video on youtube that showed someone catching mategai. They pop out of the sand really fast. I find them kind of creepy. I don't know if I could catch one and eat it.
