Common Sense
"It's common sense," said my student. But what may be common for one person, might not be common for all.
I recently heard of a story where a Japanese family grew up drinking bottled green tea. They never made tea any other way and probably never thought about it.
A daughter in the family got married and moved out of her house. When her in-laws asked her to make them some green tea, she didn't see any bottles and admitted "I don't know how."
I had the same situation with a friend. We were grocery shopping together and my friend was nervously preparing for her parents to visit her in Japan. When we got to the coffee section, she said she was freaking out because she had never made coffee in a coffee maker.
I've been thinking all week about some kind of "common sense" story that happened to me, but I don't remember anything. Maybe it was too embarrassing and I wanted to forget? Maybe it was about cooking? A lot of this blog has been exposing my faults and embarrassing moments in Japan, but that's because I can laugh about it as an adult.
So what did you somehow miss learning? Would your country call it "common sense?"
