Aesop Rock
Pictured above is a fellow who goes by the name Aesop Rock. He is a rapper from Long Island, NY. He is notorious for making it at the top of a list of most verbose rappers ever, or more specifically as the person who has used the most different words across his entire catalogue. the margin between him and the second-place rapper in terms of diction diversity is pretty large. That means that our Aesop Rock is someone worth studying for those of you serious about expanding your vocabulary range. I have been a huge fan of his since around 2004 when one of my gym buddies introduced me to his music on the way to school together one day. He is pretty difficult to get into, especially his early stuff, when his production skills wasn’t as good as it is now. I would however look into his album titled Labor Days. In it you’ll find a song called “Daylight,” which gained fame as an underground rap anthem of the disenfranchised. His early work is marked by his collaboration with his labelmates, those who represent the label known as Definitive Jux, which was cofounded and CEO’d by my other favorite rapper El-P (whom I also recommend you check out). But for an accessible point of entry into Aesop Rock’s massive and diverse discography, check out his song on YouTube called “None Shall Pass,” which also became somewhat of an anthem in its own rights. Another accessible song of his is “Gopher Guts.” His music is a bit dark and heavy, but it is incredibly deep and rewarding. He remains my favorite rapper to this day, and one of my favorite people on my planet.
