Adventures in Dining

When my mother cooks something we have never eaten, she calls it "Adventures in Dining."
On Sunday, some of us Gem School teachers went to Matsuyama. We had an incredible dinner of all sorts of things. The sushi was laid in a bowl made of ice, there was a special green mochi wrapped in bamboo, and some things that I couldn't even identify! The nabe was my favorite, it had udon and meat. The soup was amazing. I was secretly upset when they took it away too soon.
A bowl of fish swimming in delicious broth followed the nabe, and I was eagerly eating it and not paying attention, when suddenly my teeth felt something chewy. I swallowed it but I didn't like it. I looked down at my bowl and saw a hole...where the EYE should be!? It was then that I learned I had been eating a large fish head, including the eyeball.
I may have explained before that Westerners don't like to see the heads of the animals they're eating. It makes them feel weird. I have gotten better at eating Japanese cuisine like that but I can now say that I don't like eyeballs!
