Bike breakdown!

My bike broke while I was riding home from work one afternoon. It was a Saturday and it was the Joyfit that I had just passed on the route home, when my bike suddenly broke to a stop. I heard a loud clanging sound and then I realized that the source was in my read wheel. The gear shifter hanger literally broke off and was then clanging around in the spokes in the back wheel. I stopped immediately, for fear of further damage, such as completely bending my spokes out of shape, snapping my chain, or in simply breaking the gear shifter itself. It would have been impossible to begin with for me to have continued anyways, actually, since as the shifter is connected to my chains, it would have simply continued to be dragged along the chain and into the pedaling unit itself. At that point, were I to have continued it would have shattered into pieces and possible hurt my ankles or legs with all the metal parts that would have been flying around. Because the shifter on stuck on my chain I was forced to carry the bike on my should, or under my arms, or on my head the entire rest of the way. I couldn’t wheel it home on the ground since the chain was locked by that the hanging-on shifter unit. It took an entire one and a half hours to finally make it home. I’ve been bikeless for the past week and a half now, enjoying the slow life and getting in some train time while saving money from even purchasing train tickets.
