Teaching football

So the Super Bowl was last weekend. For those who might not know, the Super Bowl is the championship game of the football season in America. (Also, when I say "football" in this article, I mean American football, not soccer. Just to be clear. :) ) It's also usually the most watched sporting event in America every year, and almost always the most watched TV program of the year.

A lot of my Japanese students have asked about it,so I decided I'd blog about it.

first, the game itself is really the least important aspect of Super Bowl Sunday. Two teams are represented int he game, of course, so that means that two big cities are really excited about it, but the rest of the country generally couldn't care less. Most people watching just want to see the team that beat THEIR favorite team lose. IF you're interested in learning the rules of American football in detail, you can ask me, or just look on youtube. There's plenty of videos out there.

The other reason that people watch, is, of course, for the commercials.

There are, again, tons of compilations of super bowl commercials reaching back through time. Because it's so expensive to advertise during the super bowl, many companies go crazy with their spots, spending tons of money on huge cinematic ads. Many are really entertaining.

There's more, of course, liek the super bowl party, bars and restaurants catering to super bowl fans, and even more, but you'll have to come to class to ask about that stuff. ;)
