Opera

This is the world famous Vienna Stadtsoper (City Opera House), one of the two opera houses in this town famous since the days of Mozart and Hayden for its love of opera. The second is the Volksoper, which is more for operetta, light hearted, comic opera, which also has a long tradition. In fact there is also a third smaller one, the Theater on the Wien (the Vienna River) where some of the Mozart operas were first played. Since music is one of the glories of the town, a lot of time, energy, and of course money is invested in keeping the traditions alive, and even today all the great singers and orchestra conductors regularly perform in the theaters and concert halls there. My apartment is just down the road from this place, two subway stops away, and since standing room for performances is very cheap (about 5 dollars) one can afford to go often if one likes, as of course so many people do. There is also the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (not to be confused with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, completely different but excellent as well), whose home conductor is none other than Seiji Ozawa, the former protege of Herbert von Karajan. Truly a musical city, well worth visiting. Do come sometime. Look me up if you do.
