Trying New Things

Many Americans start the New Year with a New Years Resolution, or something they want to do or change about themselves for the next year. I have started early and I have chosen to make myself try new things! One of my students brought pickled shallots for me to try and they were really good! Now a few of my other students have made me want to try natto! I've never eaten it but I've seen it! Miyuki, my boss, gave the teachers a special persimmons to try and I am so excited to try it! What will you change about yourself or what do you want to do in the New Year?

Companionship and Nurturing Love

Since coming to Japan I have had very little opportunity to actually travel around and enjoy the natural beauty of Japan. I have sadly missed many opportunities to explore places like Hiroshima, Hokkaido, and some places in Kyushu. I truly regret not taking the time out of my very busy schedule to go to these places and explore. Since returning in October I have really been trying to remedy this.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go to Shodoshima Island with my younger sister and my friend. While there we had the opportunity to see a beautiful waterfall, feed monkeys, stand on tall peaks, and wander an expansive forest in the dark of night. It was quite difficult for me to do due to a few things, but for the most part it was an amazing and exciting adventure. The image above is one that my beautiful and talented sister took on the trip. When looking at this image it brings forth many emotions and wishes. The image itself is absolutely beautiful. It captures the true nature of companionship and nurturing love, something that I believe no photo of a human being could possess. I would go into the emotions and thoughts that this image stirs within me, but it would be very complex so I will just stop here.

Does this image invoke anything within you? What do you think or feel when looking at the details of this image?

Thank you for reading,

Leigh

Weekend in Takamatsu pt.2!

Hello!

Well, I wasn't expecting to return to Takamatsu quite so soon after my last trip the week before, but the fates conspired and it turned out I was able to spend a Sunday there all day recently. Rose had made an appointment with a hair stylist there weeks previous, and there was a big plan to wake up early and catch the train into the city in order to make the appointment on time. However, as it turned out, there was a mix up in the schedules she was given, and I offered to drive her into the appointment. I hadn't planned on doing much that day, and I really enjoyed wandering around the city last time, so doing it again so soon wasn't a problem at all!

The trickiest part of the whole trip was trying to find the salon in the first place! The route we took went down some pretty small one- and two-way streets, and there were lots of blind turns and back roads to take as well, so I was nervous while getting there, but once I understood the rules of the road in those places, it was all OK. After I dropped Rose off at her appointment, I had about 3 hours all to myself in the big city. I went back to some of the places I wasn't able to get to the last time we were there that I was interested in, including a really delicious Indian curry restaurant. I also went to some of the places that I was at the week before, like the Kawaramachi Flag Mall, and finally bought that beautiful wallet that I had my eye on before. I'm very happy I got it, and it made the whole trip worthwhile as well.

After her hair appointment was over, i met Rose and some of the other teachers at Round One for some light snacks and Karaoke! I was great fun, and something that I've always enjoyed doing. It was a great way to spend a Sunday, and I was glad to spend it with such great people.
