Food, Shopping, and History in Osaka
My next adventure was to Osaka. I had flown into the airport when I first arrived in Japan, but this was my first chance to explore the city. After a long early morning bus ride from Takamatsu, we arrived! The station was huge and tremendously busy. We left our things in a locker and set out down the Dotonbori. Of course, the first thing we did was get something to eat! First, we tried takoyaki. The kind served in Osaka was huge and absolutely delicious. Watching the servers make it was mesmerizing. They turned the balls over so fast! Next, we went to try okonomiyaki. That was probably my favorite. We had two different kinds, and they were so flavorful and had a ton of delicious trimmings. Next, we did a bit of shopping, and I bought my mom a birthday card. It showed two women walking below a spray of cherry blossoms. It looked very Japanese, and I knew my mom would like it. Last, we made the long trek up to Osaka Castle. It was my first time in a Japanese-style castle, and I was so excited! It was a bit disappointing that none of the rooms had been restored, but the exhibits told us a good bit of Japanese history, and we got to read all about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was fascinating, and gave me some insight into a tumultuous part of Japan’s history. I can’t wait to go back to Osaka for more food, shopping, and history!
