Remembrance Day in Canada
November the 11th is a special holiday in Canada. It's Remembrance Day, which is the day that we remember and honor the soldiers who had fought and died in the first and second world wars, as well as the soldiers who continue to serve Canada today. It is a very solemn occasion, and one that carries a lot of importance to a lot of people who live in Canada. There are special services that take place both in government offices, public areas, and schools all across the country to remind every citizen about the sacrifices made in order to make Canada and the world a safer and better place.
Poems are read, songs are sung, and wreaths of flowers are placed on graves. It is also traditional to wear a small poppy flower, which is a symbol taken from the poem "In Flanders Field", which I will copy down below this post. It is well worth the read, and is read across the country as a message to end war and maintain peace.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
