Marugame Temple
Hello!
Today, I'd like to speak a little about a short trip I took this past week. I was lucky enough to be able to make a visit to one of the Buddhist temples in Marugame city. Shikoku Island is home to a very famous set of Buddhist temples that were built over 1200 years ago, and are still used to this day. There are 88 of them throughout the island, and there are pilgrimages made to each of the temples every year, usually in the spring and autumn. At this time of year, it's not uncommon at all to see people walking down the roads everywhere in travelling outfits, making their way across the island. I was informed that if you choose to walk the pilgrimage, it can take up to about two months, but that lots of people these days choose other modes of transportation to make the trip.
The temple itself was beautiful, and I wish that I knew more about the Japanese Buddhist tradition in order to better know what I was observing. Even for the uninitiated like myself, the temple was something special to see, and if anyone has the opportunity to go to even one of these famous temples on Shikoku island, it would absolutely be worth your time!
