Hello!

My name is Nelson Alexander Scott, although I have only ever been known as Alex. When I was born, my parents couldn't decide whether to name me Alexander (my mom's choice), or Nelson (my dad's), so they compromised. They would name me Nelson, but call me Alex. This has been a source of confusion for teachers, doctors, and official documents for as long as I can remember.

I was born in a very small town in Northern Manitoba, Canada called Flin Flon. It has a very silly name, to be sure, but it is a town with a very interesting history that I hope to be able to get into on this blog at some point. I was born in 1988, and lived there until we moved in 2000 to a slightly bigger city called Brandon, were I went to high school. I went to university in two cities: the first was at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the second was at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. I studied theatre for two years at the U of W, when I realized that theatre was absolutely not where I wanted to be in life. I then attended MUN studying Communications Studies, which was a combination of philosophy, art, and marketing. I had a lot of fun studying there, and still hope to do something with that degree at some point in my life.

At some point along my education, I decided that I wanted to see the world. The best way I could find to do this (short of somehow running into millions of dollars) was to work as a teacher of English, and make money while exploring what the world has to offer.

I am very excited to be starting my journey at Gem School, and to spend a year here in Japan immersing myself in an entirely new country and culture. So far the road has been bumpy (and what new adventure doesn't have some bumps at the beginning??), but I'm so excited to be here and to be part of the Gem School experience!
