Superheroes

Today I was struck by the thought, "America sure does love superheroes." Then I started wondering, why does America, the world, like superheroes. In going through some research I found that The Scarlet Pimpernel, an old favorite of mine, was perhaps the beginning of the anonymous fighting hero that much of the world loves. I also found that figures such as Zorro and Batman were loosely based upon him. But all of this doesn't answer the question: Why do we feel we need superheroes as opposed to our current law systems? I ended up at the Smithsonian website reading an article written by Robin Rosenburg who is a clinical psychologist and she said something very interesting, superhero origin stories "show us not how to become super but how to be heroes, choosing altruism over the pursuit of wealth and power" and that heroes "inspire us and provide models of coping with adversity, finding meaning in loss and trauma, discovering our strengths and using them for good purpose." Then it came to me, we love superheroes not because they are super or more powerful than us but because they do the right thing no matter what. It makes total sense! But now I am faced with another question, Why don't people simply do the right thing?
