Fresh Produce

In Sendai I was very lucky to have a farmer's market just around the corner, near Sendai Station and my job there. That meant I could slip out during a break at work and get really great vegetables and fruit like it should be, locally produced and not industrialized. There's also one of these in Kanonji, though much more limited in its selection, but it has some really nice produce. Since I'm pretty much vegetarian - I don't eat meat at home, but I won't make a fuss if it gets served, and I do eat fish, that means it's really nice to get locally produced food, really fresh. Strangely though, that doesn't necessarily mean it looks so great. Most shops like to offer uniform, perfectly shaped produce, that looks like a picture. Oftentimes though the really good stuff doesn't just look good, but tastes better than it looks. In fact, I wonder sometimes if the producers of these industrially produced products ever think about taste, not to mention wholesomeness. I really doubt it. What's more important is how something gets produced, with care, without chemicals, not just a perfectly circular shape or what have you. That's how I look at it -taste more than appearance. What do you think?
