Biking in Japan

Biking in Japan

One thing that excited me about coming to Japan was the prevalence of bikers. In most places in America biking is somewhat rare and can often be dangerous because of drivers being unaware or there not being a safe place to ride. Before coming here I had a notion that Japan would have amazing biking services, like giant bike lanes or special traffic privileges. Yet at least for where I am that generally isn't the case. Amazingly, this still is a great place to bike. The reason isn't surprising, the drivers are incredibly aware and considerate of cyclist. In some places the sidewalks are not the best to bike on or the roads are very narrow, but that has never been a problem because drivers are so cautious. So far I've pretty much biked everywhere and everyday but I haven't experienced even the slightest uncomfortable situation on the bike. In America the situation was almost entirely different, even when there was special bike lanes. Realizing this made me appreciate how much more important it is to develop a culture or ethos around an idea, instead of just building institutions to promote an idea. Bike lanes and special privileges only work if everyone respects and follows them.
