Weddings

I just recently met some new people, including a couple who had been married not too long ago. The husband (a non-Japanese) took out his wedding album, showing pictures and talking about his wedding day. It was interesting to learn about some of the differences between a Japanese wedding and an American one. For example, obviously, the style of dress is different. In Japan, in a traditional wedding, the groom would wear a haori and hakama (which I think is pretty cool). In America, he would wear a suit, usually black (though I have a friend who wore a white suit to his).

Here is a picture of me with my friend at his wedding:

That's another thing I noticed. In the pictures, I saw the bride, and the groom, but didn't see any bridesmaids or groomsmen. I don't know if that means they didn't have any, or they just didn't take pictures of them. In America, the bride and groom would usually (not always) have a few of each, plus a maid of honor and a best man. I was the best man for my friend's wedding in the picture above. My job was to help make sure that things went well for the wedding, as well as deliver a speech about the married couple. That was hard. But then I learned that the groom in a Japanese wedding has to make 3 different speeches throughout the night of his wedding. That seems even harder (especially if you are a foreigner getting married in Japan, and don't speak Japanese very well).

Guess I better start practicing, :D
