Physical actiivity
I was recently back in Kyoto for a weekend, and noticed how many people there were jogging along the riverside. Here too in Kanonji, every day there are quite a few people jogging, or senior citizens at least taking their long afternoon stroll along the beach to get some exercise. I'm old enough to remember when so many things we take for granted had to be done manually even in the U.S., like buying ice to put in the icebox, before the advent of refrigerators, just as an example. I also look outside my window, just down the road from the railway station, but there's the rice farmer planting, irrigating, and harvesting his rice right there. We do need to do something physical in our lives, whether it be manual work, or working out, or something, otherwise strange things happen in our heads as well. As the old saying goes "idleness breeds laziness", most strikingly of the mental kind, acceptance of easy answers which can breed havoc in the long run. Therein lies madness.
