Cycled to Niihama
This past Sunday I cycled all the way to Niihama. Two of my coworkers went on their own excursion across the Shimanami bridge connecting Shikoku and Honshu at Imabari, so I thought I would try to meet them at Imabari. However, I couldn’t make it that far. I will attempt to go the distance this Sunday, depending on the weather and if a friend of mine would agree to lunch in Saijo or not. If not, then I will attempt the distance to Imabari instead of Saijo, making it my longest cycling trip so far. I am very excited to give it a second go. I’ll be much better prepared this time around, now that I am more aware of the limits of my equipment and body. One thing that I’ll have to do, for instance, is get rid of the fanny pack and all sorts of baggage hanging from my body, as it all tends to cut circulation to various parts of my body. On my last trip, the one to Niihama, I had to stop occasionally to readjust my fanny pack and to shake out my limbs to restore blood circulation to my limbs. It was very annoying and it increased my travel immensely, as I had to stop more and more on the way back due to fatigue and the setting sun. Another thing I’d like to do is get new long-distance travel gloves, and some better cushioned cycling pants. As they are now, my gloves are “racing” gloves, so their thin, small, and half pads only at the bottom of my palm; and my cycling shorts are only lightly padded. Perhaps with more padding I’ll have a more comfortable ride and consequently will be able to cycle for longer stints at a time, instead of stopping every 30 minutes to readjust everything. As to equipment, I have one more adjustment: Get a bike pump that attaches to the bike! It is because of my free pump that I have to wear a bag at all, so to carry it in case I should get a popped tire on the road. And there are two more things I’d like to change for this second go at it: get more music on my phone for entertainment, and to leave early! This last cycling trip to Niihama was largely on a whim. I even planned out the travel route the morning of, and that morning I woke at 7am, and wound up leaving the apartment at 9:20am. I want to try to get better sleep and to leave earlier this time around, so I can at least make it back to my apartment while the sun is still up.
