profi over people

Profit over people

That's tap water burning, It was caused by fracking. There's a growing realization that the idea of profit cannot be the only criteria for the good life. The right of property does not include the right to poison the community, to cause death and injury. That should be elementary. Near my home town Buffalo, New York, years ago there was one of the biggest environmental disasters ever, the Love Canal disaster. People's homes had been built over chemical waste, and the health effects were catastrophic. It was much like similar cases in Minamata in Japan, Seveso in Northern Italy, Bhopal in India, in the state my adopted son lives in. This week though a law was passed, after huge decade long protests - fracking, a horrible method of extracting oil and gas, has been banned in the State of New York. IFracking uses huge amounts of water which is then put back as toxic waste into the water table, and is known to cause earthquakes. New York is on one of the biggest deposits of this dirty fuel in the world. The companies stood to make huge profits at the cost of human health and lives. A drop in the bucket in the ongoing ecological disaster, but a huge victory for the sacredness of all life, including human life. A victory to protect ourselves and our children. Some really good news for the holidays. That's the way to go.
