From Florida Plains to Japan's Mountains
Greetings, all! Welcome to my first blog. Three weeks ago, I left my hot and humid home of 23 years, the sunshine state known as Florida. I grew up in Miami where the palm trees flourish, Spanish is a primary language and it is almost always a perfect beach day.
Throughout my 23 years of living in Florida, I had visited many other parts of the state, as well. And while it is a lengthy state, the landscape does not change too much no matter how far north or south you venture to. It is beautiful in its own way, but my heart always yearned to live on or be surrounded by mountains. I think this is partly due to my heritage.
Both of my parents are Puerto Rican, and I grew up visiting the "Isla del Encanto" (island of enchantment) every summer since I was very young. Every time I would return to the island, I not only felt over-joyed to see to my family and feel at home because of them, but I felt at home with the mountains. Puerto Rico is an incredibly beautiful island that is surrounded by luscious tall ranges of foliage, and my heart always felt a connection with this aspect. I knew I would one day live where the mountains lived.
And so, here I am. From Florida plains to Japan's mountains, of which I can see and smell from my balcony. How incredible! I can feel my heart thanking me when I look out on the horizon and see volumes of life in the distance. Everywhere I look, I am surrounded by this natural beauty and it feels as though the mountains are hugging me, saying "welcome home." I could not be happier to be here in Japan and I look forward to see what this island has in store for me.
Until next time,
Cristina
