Castles
Hello, all!
Yesterday I walked over to Kawanoe. I explored the city and visited the castle.

There's a lovely view from the top of the keep! (In English, the "keep" is the central structure of a castle. Japanese keeps are usually towers. Kawanoe Castle is a hill castle, so it's very small. Maybe a better English word would be, "fort.")

The castle is a modern reconstruction, so the building isn't very interesting. There are some interesting things inside, though: old weapons, armor, and a map of the town before the coastline was changed. It's really cool to get a sense of old Kawanoe!
I've always liked castles. My favorite Japanese castle is definitely Matsumoto Castle, in Nagano Prefecture.

I lived in Matsumoto for a year and a half, and walked past the castle every day. Matsumoto Castle has never been destroyed, so everything inside is original. It has so much personality!
My favorite Western castle is Caernarfon Castle, in Wales.
The castle is about 700 years old, and is "semi-ruined." Some areas are finished, but others are just empty stone walls. I like it because you can go anywhere inside the castle grounds, and Caernarfon Castle is huge! You can spend all day exploring secret passageways and learning about Medieval Wales. Caernarfon Castle is still used today. The Prince of Wales receives his crown at Caernarfon!
Have you seen any really interesting castles?
