Christmas in Japan

One of the things that surprised me about Japan was the number of Western holidays the country has adopted. Halloween is one example but even more so Japan has full embraced Christmas. While I haven't experienced it yet, I understand the Japanese Christmas is more of a couples holiday, akin to Valentine's Day in America. Even so, I think Japan may be more into some aspects of Christmas, or at least starts celebrating it earlier. In America the general rule is to not sell or advertise Christmas items until after Thanksgiving, the end of November. Inevitably, this is a broken rule very often and you start seeing Christmas decorations or goods well before then. But in Japan, starting the day after Halloween I started seeing tons of decorations, giants lit up trees, Christmas music, and shops entirely selling Christmas things. The extent of the early enthusiasm is something that I don't think is common at all in America. I'll be really interested to see how the holiday is celebrated as the days to Christmas get closer.
